Cambodian VIP revenue growth leads world market Cambodia is expected to lead the globe in terms of VIP gaming revenue growth as a percentage this year, according to a new report issued by US investment bank Morgan Stanley. The report projects that Cambodian casinos will post a 39 per cent increase in 2016 VIP proceeds, noting that global casino VIP revenue recorded its first quarter-on-quarter growth in Q1 this year following eight consecutive quarterly declines. While it projected that Macau would continue to have negative growth, Cambodia alone – which reported a 174 per cent increase in first-quarter growth at a total of $81 million – helped buoy global VIP revenue performance predictions. The turnaround was attributed primarily to Chinese high rollers being more confident as the Chinese property market and currency stabilises, and the consolidation of junket operators. The data highlighted that the “VIP market outside Macau is gaining relevance” as a global share of revenue. Michael Ting, a Hong Kong-based gaming research analyst for CIMB Securities, said that the continued anti-corruption campaign in China has been a boon for Cambodian casinos. “The trend is that as there is more diversification away from Macau for VIP junkets, peripheral markets in the region will come to Cambodia,” he said, adding that Cambodia has proven to be one of the most stable destinations in the ASEAN region. He added that with NagaWorld planning to launch its NagaCity Walk by the second half of this year, and Naga2 in 2017, the Kingdom’s gaming industry should sustain its high level of growth. Lorien Pilling, director at Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC) in the UK, said that Cambodia would continue to benefit from Macau’s slowdown. “Prior to the issues in Macau, Cambodia was not really positioned as a high-end VIP casino destination,” he said. “The growth has come partly because of a repositioning of the Cambodian casino sector and also because it was starting from a low base.” Pilling added that while Cambodia has done well in terms of attracting the VIP segment, it has also benefitted from Singapore not pushing for junket growth. “The Asian region has high VIP demand and low regulated supply to cater for it, so Cambodia should be able to sustain its growth, despite future competition from the Philippines and South Korea,” he said. Aharon Gini, general manager of the Queenco Hotel and Casino in Sihanoukville, said that the VIP sector was essential and that a marketable shift was beginning to be felt for the coastal destination. “We have a lot of interest from big travel agencies coming from different cities in China directly to Sihanoukville,” he said. “The signals are much more solid as groups are signing contracts and putting down physical deposits for July and August.” Ashish Patel, general manager of Titan King Casino in Bavet, which operates 139 gaming tables, said that if there was an increase in VIP revenue, it was limited. “I think that information is wrong,” he said. “We have not seen an increase in VIP customers. And if there is, it is only in the Phnom Penh area.”

Macao Gaming Show introduces new name and statement of intent The Macao Gaming Show will be delivering the Chinese Government's message of economic diversity over the next three years, launching its statement of intent with a new name for the 2016 exhibition which will be held at the Venetian Macau November 15-17. The MGS expo, the fastest growing exhibition on the international industry calendar, will now be named the MGS Entertainment Show. The new direction has been endorsed by the show's Government partners, and will serve as a platform to help power the SAR and central Government's program to expand the range of exhibitors and products from both the gaming and non-gaming sides of the industry. Owned and organised by the MGEMA, the Macau SAR's most senior trade association, the MGS Entertainment Show is now preparing for its fourth edition. Backed by three years of significant growth, and now armed with a powerful new agenda and name, the exhibition will be updating and modernising the traditional expo model, applied originally in Las Vegas, to bring to Asia its first ever contemporary, all-encompassing gaming, entertainment and leisure show. Already serving as the Asian gaming industry's largest independent exhibition, the MGS Entertainment Show will draw on all the key sectors that support the development of leisure and tourism destinations. Whilst maintaining its primary focus on gaming, entertainment and technology, the exhibition will also draw heavily on the key service and ancillary sectors that help drive the business economy from hospitality, finance and investment through to vending, marketing and content houses. Jay Chun, chairman of the MGEMA and one of the key business figures driving Macau's diversity vision, commented: "The MGS Entertainment Show is more than an exhibition. Its intention is to reach every level of industry that plays a crucial part in driving business in a tourist and entertainment destination. Gaming and its pioneering technology will always sit at the heart of our show. It's what we are and where we come from. But business does not stop there. Our economy - both here in Macau and throughout Asia - is about opportunity. And as the city and region opens up to economic expansion, the show must provide the platform for this. Our casinos go hand in hand with entertainment. They go hand in hand with new technology, new delivery platforms, new innovations - everything that makes a destination work. That's why diversity on the showfloor must reflect diversity in our economy." He added: "It's for this very reason that the Government is backing our show, why the casino operators are backing the show, why big-hitting innovators such as Novomatic are back the show, and why every major gaming and entertainment body in the region is backing the show. We're on a long journey; the MGS Entertainment Show is here to stay and together with the most important voices in the Asian and international gaming and entertainment industry, we are determined that come 2020, this exhibition is the stand-out business event in the Asia Pacific region." The third edition of the now named MGS Entertainment Show proved a major success, with the MGEMA confirming that all the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) showed a positive year-on-year trend. This year's attendance numbers rose to 13,186 from 11,987 in 2014, an increase of 10 percent; the number of exhibiting companies rose to 168 from 146 (+15 percent); and the number of exhibiting countries represented at MGS increased from 20 to 22. The 4th edition of the MGS Entertainment Show (2016) will be held at the Venetian on Nov. 15-17 November 2016. Canberra casino relaunches with $14 million refurbishment Canberra casino will reopen to the public on Friday after a $14 million refurbishment aimed at drawing international gamblers to Canberra. On Thursday night, casino owner Aquis Entertainment and Cox Architecture firm hosted an opening party for more than 600 guests, with proceeds donated to Lifeline Canberra and the Ricky Stuart Foundation. Photo: Jay Cronan Canberra casino manager Rhiannon Bach, who was poached to oversee the refurbishment from a major casino in Macau, said the refurbishment would surprise many. "Quite frankly, this casino is unrecognisable from what it used to," she said. "I will be blunt, when I came to this casino from Macau I thought to myself this is the worst casino I have ever seen in my life." "But it has potential and the opportunity to do this refurbishment was a chance to create space worthy of the nation's capital." Ms Bach said the company hoped the arrival of international flights at Canberra Airport would transform the local economy and tourism. Advertisement "There is a great opportunity with international flights from Singapore and that will draw extra people to the casino besides locals," she said. The refurbishment comes amid a $330 million bid to build a new casino with two hotels, restaurants and resort-style entertainment. Hong-Kong based Aquis Entertainment claims the project would bring an extra 750,000 visitors a year including high-end Chinese gamblers. The development hinged on approval for poker machines at the casino, which the ACT government agreed to in early May, effectively breaking clubs' stranglehold on machines. The move has angered Canberra clubs who have relied on gambling profit to stay afloat and reinvest in the community. The Canberra Vikings Group has already proposed an ambitious development project in Canberra's south with profits falling dramatically and poker machines destined for Canberra casino. Ms Bach said the refurbishment was a small insight into the future of the Canberra casino district. "I think that the level of quality that you will see here is what we will bring should the redevelopment go forward," she said.

Macau decline contributes to Chow Tai Fook Jewellery’s 46% profit drop Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd., has reported a full year profit drop of 46 percent as the Chinese economy beyond Macau gaming has continued to slow. Poor demand in Hong Kong, as well as Macau contributed to the massive decline for the world’s biggest publicly-traded jewelry store chain. According to Bloomberg, Chow Tai Fook net income for the 12 month period ending March 31 was down nearly 50% over last year at HK$2.94 billion ($379 million) compared to the previous year. The outlet said the company’s stated revenues were in line with nearly a dozen analyst estimates they had compiled which averaged out to expected revenues of HK$3.19 billion. Many Chinese shoppers who used to make up about 30 percent of Hong Kong’s retail trade are forgoing the nearby island for other destinations according to the report. Macau has seen a two year long gambling decline based partially on the Chinese economy, but most analysts believe that Beijing’s crackdown on corruption there has had the greatest effect on the decline. “We expect the market environment for the region to remain challenging in the year ahead,” Chow Tai Fook said in the statement. Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited is the majority shareholder of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd., among other companies., and is deeply involved in developing multi-billion dollar integrated resorts and casinos. The most recent publicity in the gaming world centers around the company’s involvement, through subsidiary Gold Yield Enterprises, with Macau junket operator Sun City and Vina Capital in developing the previously long-stalled Hoi An South Integrated Resort in Vietnam. Together the companies are investing some $4 billion in the IR with the first phase set to open by Q1 2019. “The phase one integrated resort is due for completion in the first quarter of 2019 and will include approximately 1,000 lodging rooms [in] three hotels, residential villas and apartments along with a championship golf course, food and beverage offerings, retail areas and a variety of further leisure and entertainment facilities,” read a statement from Suncity as reported by World Casino News. Chow Tai Fook Enterprises is also part of a joint venture with Star Entertainment Group and the Far Eastern Consortium who won the bid for a casino resort at Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane, Australia. That project is expected to open by 2022. The consortium was able to garner a license with effect for for 99 years which also prohibits any other casino from opening within 60 kilometers for the next 25 years. It’s unclear whether the company has made any progress on their plans announced in early 2015 to invest over $2 billion in casino resort in the Incheon Free Economic Zone near South Korea’s Incheon International Airport. As to the Jewelry division’s current fortunes, Chow Tai Fook plans to close outlets that are under-performing, with over 2,300 of the Mandarin and Cantonese shoppers’ favorites under the microscope and potentially on the chopping block. The company lists 19 outlets in Macau.

Macau Casinos Win $18.4 billion In May 澳門五月剎數184億 Gross gaming revenue in Macau fell 9.6 percent to 18.4 billion patches ($2.3 billion) during the month of May, according to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. The decline marks two full years of year-over-year declines for Macau’s casino industry. In order to reverse the trend, the government is pushing casino operators to diversify and offer more non-gaming options. In other words, the casinos are catering more to the mass market gambler rather than the VIP customer, i.e. the high-roller. Bloomberg reported that gaming win still represents about 90 percent of Macau casino operators’ total revenue. For comparison, in Nevada it was just 43.2 percent of total revenue in FY 2015. That’s an all-time low, according to UNLV research. More than 20 years ago it was roughly 62 percent in the Silver State. It’s unclear what percentage Macau officials are envisioning. Despite two years worth of declines, Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands are slated to open new casinos later this year. Though, both have experienced delays already. The city’s gaming revenue fell 34 percent year-over-year to $29 billion in 2015. Earlier this year, it was predicted by Bloomberg to fall by another eight percent this year. Macau had a record $45.2 billion in 2013. The city’s fortunes have tumbled thanks to a cooling Chinese economy and Beijing’s pressure on the local government to crack down on alleged corruption within the system of lending money to high-rollers. The economy of Macau is heavily reliant on the casino industry.
